Nassau County Building Department

Mission

The Building Department reviews and approves plans, issues permits for residential and commercial construction, and performs building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical, and sign inspections according to the Florida Building Code. The Building Department also provides building code and Unsafe Structure enforcement for the below referenced codes.

Florida Building Code

The Nassau County Building Department is currently enforcing the 2007 Florida Building Code with 2009 supplements, and 2005 National Electric Code.

Our Nassau County Certified Building Official

Robert J. McKinney, C.B.O.

As the Building Official, Mr. McKinney also serves as the Flood Zone Administrator, Contractor Licensing Official, Impact Fee Administrator, Class I Zoning Administrator, and the Damage Assessment Coordinator.

Mr. McKinney is a fourth generation builder with almost 40 years experience in property inspections. Having inspected all forms of construction for F.H.A., V.A., H.U.D., federally insured lenders, and municipal governments, Mr. McKinney has qualified as an expert witness in local, state, and federal courts.

Mr. McKinney holds a Certified Building Official designation from the International Code Council and is a state of Florida Building Code Administrator. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration (Management) from Bryant University and was a graduate student at International College in Ft. Myers working toward a Masters in Public Administration when he accepted the assignment as Building Official.

Important Policy Changes

Contractor Policy Accounts

As of Monday, June 1, 2009, Contractor deposit/escrow accounts can be astablished with the Nassau County Building Department. These accounts may be used for permit fees, re-inspection fees, and licensing renewals in lieu of check, cash, or money order.
